You’re Not Doing It Wrong—Here’s How God Meets You
What Should You Focus On When Meditating on God?
Someone recently emailed me this beautiful question:
“When I’m meditating on God and trying to connect… what exactly am I supposed to focus on?”
And honestly? That question lit me up — because it speaks to something so many people feel but don’t ask out loud.
Do you focus on a specific image, like Jesus or a loving face?
Or is it better to focus on qualities, like unconditional love, peace, or divine light?
Or… what if you just sit there and don’t know what to focus on?
Here’s the thing:
There Isn’t Just One Right Answer
You’re not doing it wrong. I promise.
People connect to God in so many different ways — through scripture, through meditation, through nature, through art, through silence.
The reason you’ll hear so many answers to this question is because…
There are lots of right answers.
Whatever helps you feel closer to God — use it. That’s your doorway. That’s sacred.
If picturing a loving being helps, do that.
If focusing on light, warmth, or peace works, great.
If you’re more abstract and just feel the energy of “something more”… beautiful.
God is not picky. God is relational.
God Will Meet You Where You Are
One of the clearest things I’ve ever felt from the Divine is this:
God wants to connect with us.
If you have the desire in your heart — even just the tiniest flicker — God will meet you more than halfway. Even if you’re unsure. Even if your mind is full of questions. Even if you’re just trying to believe but don’t feel anything yet.
All you need is the intention. That’s it. That’s your soul saying yes.
God understands we’re in physical bodies. That we don’t always see, hear, or feel the spiritual clearly. That we’ve been taught to overthink everything.
But still… God shows up.
The Form Doesn’t Matter — The Relationship Does
You don’t have to see God as male. I use “He” out of habit — it’s what I grew up with — but I know God is way beyond that.
God is all masculine and all feminine. The ultimate divine integration.
You can call God Mother. You can say Universe. Source. Creator. The One.
It’s all good. Seriously.
God includes it all. God is it all.
So if something feels safe and true to you, use that. Let yourself connect in the way your heart needs.
Children Get It
We adults tend to overcomplicate things.
But children? They just connect. No filters. No mental gymnastics. Just love and curiosity.
We can learn a lot from that.
So if you’re wondering how to connect to God in meditation — start with your heart. Let go of the “shoulds.” Try what feels good. Follow the breadcrumbs. And trust… God is already reaching for you too.
