Do I Always Feel Joy When I Meditate? Here’s the Truth.
What Meditation Actually Feels Like for Me
It’s not always joyful — and that’s okay.
Hi, I’m David Michaels. Someone recently asked me what meditation is like for me — whether I always feel joy in my heart when I do it, or if it’s more complex than that. And honestly? I think it’s a great question.
There are so many ideas out there about what meditation is “supposed” to be. But for me, it’s really simple: it’s about showing up with honesty, allowing whatever’s there to be there, and reconnecting with God.
My Real-Life Practice
Most days, I meditate first thing in the morning — still under the covers, still cozy. Sometimes I do it before bed (and honestly, I sleep better when I do), but usually it’s in that gentle space between sleep and wake.
I don’t fight my thoughts. I don’t try to empty my mind or chase some “perfect” feeling. I just check in. I let the thoughts chatter. I breathe. I notice. And eventually, the noise settles — or at least softens — and I can drop into my heart.
That’s where the magic is.
Connecting with God (and Myself)
My meditation practice is really about connection — with myself, with my spirit, with God, or with my angels and guides. That connection doesn’t always show up in fireworks and joy. Sometimes it’s quiet. Sometimes it’s vulnerable.
The other day, I felt scared about posting these videos. Being visible online can feel really raw. There are kind, beautiful people like you watching — and there are others who just want to tear people down. That’s the truth.
So I brought that to God. I let myself feel it. And what I received in return was peace, comfort, a reminder that I don’t have to do anything — that my worth isn’t tied to success or visibility. That there are countless ways to love, to serve, to share your heart with the world.
Let Your Practice Be Yours
If your version of meditation looks different from mine, that’s beautiful. You don’t have to connect with God in your practice — sometimes just becoming aware of your thoughts or calming your nervous system is enough. Meditation can be spiritual, or it can be practical. It’s up to you.
Your relationship with yourself, with stillness, and with God (if that’s part of your path) is sacred — and unique. Let it be what it is. Let it change as you do.
